A Dream in the Desert
In 1976, an 18-year-old boy named Shabbir Merchant set foot in the UAE with a dream. Armed with a monthly salary of Dh1,500, Merchant’s ambition was clear: to turn his fortunes around in the promising sands of Dubai. Today, at 61, Merchant exemplifies the power of hard work and dedication, having turned his early struggles into a multi-million-dollar empire.
Early Life and Foundations of Resilience
Born in December 1958 in Karachi, Pakistan, Shabbir Merchant was the sixth of ten children. His father, Yousuf Merchant, migrated from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Karachi in 1947 with nothing but hope. Life was tough, but the senior Merchant’s hard work in the signage industry instilled resilience and determination in his children.
Reflecting on his childhood, Merchant recalls, “Growing up, life was hard for me. My family was big. Money was a struggle. We could not always buy new clothes or drive a luxury car. It was always simple home-cooked meals.”
A Bold Move to Dubai
Merchant’s path to success began when he joined his older brother Hanif Merchant in Dubai to help with his signage company. Under Hanif’s guidance, Merchant honed his skills and immersed himself in the UAE’s burgeoning market. Dubai in the late 70s was vastly different from today’s modern metropolis, but Shabbir sensed the city’s immense potential. “Dubai was a growing economy, and there was so much potential then. Just like the city grew, I grew alongside,” he shared.

The Birth of Champion Neon
In 1989, driven by his passion for the signage industry and a desire to carve out his own path, Merchant founded Champion Neon from an 800-square-foot office in Deira. He worked long hours, often driving around the city himself to ensure the quality and placement of his signage installations. His straightforward yet powerful philosophy: a happy customer is the backbone of any successful business.
Despite numerous obstacles and a lack of financial backing, Merchant’s enterprise flourished through sheer determination. “All profits generated and revenues earned have been self-created. I have never borrowed. I don’t believe in delaying anyone’s payments,” he stated with pride.

Celebrating over 30 years in business, Champion Neon continues to set benchmarks in the signage industry. Today, Champion Neon is a leading visual communication solutions provider with a 65,000-square-foot facility in Dubai Investment Park, boasting a turnover of Dh25 million to Dh30 million.

Family and Community: The Backbone of Success
Merchant credits his achievements to a combination of family support, dedicated staff, and customer loyalty. “My work timings were long. My wife was a tremendous support as well. She took great care of my daughter and sons when work would get busy,” he reminisced.
His sons, Shoaib and Shazil, who now play key roles in the business, have been instrumental in Champion Neon’s growth. Shoaib oversees sales and marketing, while Shazil heads Champion Digital, focusing on digital signage solutions. Their collective effort has propelled the business to new heights.

Resilience During the Pandemic: Innovating Through Adversity
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for businesses worldwide, and Champion Neon was no exception. However, Shabbir’s leadership and the innovative thinking of his sons, rose to the occasion, steering the company towards innovative solutions.
“Our initiative #ChampionCares has received tremendous response. We launched ‘Covid-19 Support Solutions’ to promote safety and hygiene,” Merchant explained. They shifted focus from traditional signage to digital and interactive solutions, including safety and hygiene products essential during the pandemic. This adaptability ensured the company’s resilience and continued growth.
Giving Back: A Commitment to Community
Shabbir’s victory has not made him forget his roots. He is actively involved in various cultural and professional organisations, such as the Pakistan Business Council, Pakistan Association Dubai, Pakistan Professional Wing, and World Memon Organisation. These engagements reflect his commitment to giving back to the community and supporting fellow Pakistani expatriates in the UAE.
Looking Forward: The Future of Signage
“We partnered with esteemed Pakistani entities in the UAE to support their initiatives and advertising requirements,” he noted. Champion Neon is poised for further growth. The company’s investment in new technologies, such as 3D printing, UV printing, and robotic solutions, ensures it remains at the forefront of the industry. Shabbir’s belief in the city’s potential and his unwavering dedication to his craft promise a bright future for Champion Neon and its clients.
